MedStar Honors Its Nurses During Nurses Week—and Every Week

COLUMBIA, MD (May 6, 2014)—MedStar Health is pleased to honor its 8,400 nurses during National Nurses Week, May 6-12. Maureen P. McCausland, DNSc, RN, FAAN, MedStar’s senior vice president and chief nursing officer, says, “I am grateful for the knowledge, skill and compassion MedStar nurses bring to their practice every day, with every patient.” The American Nurses Association set the theme of this year’s observance, “Ethical practice. Quality care.” Dr. McCausland adds, “This focus aligns with the priorities we have identified to guide professional nursing practice across the MedStar Health organization—and in fact, supports our high-reliability commitment to become the safest healthcare system in the country.”

MedStar’s nursing leadership has structured a professional nursing practice model that supports the delivery of care and the environment in which care is delivered. MedStar’s deep and systemwide commitment to advancing the practice of professional nursing is demonstrated through:

  • Collaborative governance structure with seven professional councils that bring focus to various nursing roles across the organization
  • Magnet Hospital designations at two hospitals, which is widely recognized as the highest honor a hospital can achieve for extraordinary nursing care
  • Academic practice partnership  for advancing nursing practice to improve the health of the public
  • NICHE hospital designations in recognition of exceptional care for older adults

In a special message to nursing leaders, Dr. McCausland said, “I hope you will take some time during National Nurses Week to reflect upon the impact you have on the lives of MedStar patients and their families—and on the nurses you lead. . . . It is an honor and a privilege to practice alongside professional nurses of your caliber.”
